RHEA explore complex, ambivalent love in “Creeping Through My Head”
Forever cherishing the “mighty riff”, the Belgian band’s new track leans into their groove-driven side, adding a new flavour to their stomping rock sound.
Combining funk-framed licks, a Hammond organ and plenty of wah-wah, RHEA have been “tapping into a new and exciting vein of creativity” in 2023. Recorded with legendary producer David Bottrill (Tool, Placebo, Smashing Pumpkins), new single, “Creeping Through My Head” is the first in a series of songs that will hit the airwaves over the next few months, before the band road-test the new material during their upcoming “Back To Basics” tour.
The five-piece are keen to keep the momentum from COVID19-released rock anthem, “Stuck in the Middle” going, which propelled the band to national acclaim. Three years on from this incredibly tough time for the music industry, the band have grown well into their boots, becoming one of mainland Europe’s most commanding acts in the alt-rock market. Questioning higher powers, political and religious topics and exploring existential questions, the band are charming and daring, “in a very un-Belgian ambitious way”.
A bottom heavy track full of ear-worm riffs and an infectious groove, the alt-rockers have taken a note from Lenny Kravitz’ book, presenting a little more timbral colour than what we’ve heard before. The addition of backing harmonies and use of instrumental sparsity present a rich contrast to vocalist Jorge’s gritty deliverance, which is something we’d definitely like to see scattered across future releases.
On the single and development of their sound, the band explain:
“Creeping Through My Head is a song about complex, ambivalent love, yet at the same time it’s about accepting the situation that you’re in, immersing in it and getting comfortable, regardless if it hurts. In general, I would say it’s about our ability to enjoy self-destructive behaviour.
Also, it’s the most funky we have ever been as a band. Working with someone like David Bottrill was truly inspiring, and together we managed to reinvent this band, while at the same time staying true to ourselves and our musical identity, which turned out to almost have a therapeutic effect on us as a band. It’s the perfect kick-off for a new era.”
RHEA have always known how to pack a punch, but this single leaves a fresh mark we don’t want to heal anytime soon. Decisive and assured, the band is working incredibly hard for a level of recognition they should have earned three years ago, yet they remain humble enough to know that it is their sound that will endure beyond many in their field. Undeniably, the only way is up for the Belgian five-piece.
