Blues infused: Fortress of the bear release “take my love away”

The fifth track on the Seattle rockers’ debut album, “Heroes around”, “take my love away” speaks of love, mixed messages and metaphors.

Comprised of members Matthew Doohan (lead vocals), Greg Hagstrom (guitar), Josh Tvrdy (guitar), Tom Stegeman (bass), and Skeeter McClellan (drums), Fortress of the Bear are a band that dip into a little bit of everything.

Released late 2022, “Heroes Around” is an album packed with flavours of alternative-rock, blues and the odd country twang. “Take My Love Away” is the LP’s rough half-time point, and was born out of an ear-warm riff created by guitarist Hagstrom, who also mixed and mastered the collection. Lyrically tackled by vocalist Doohan, who describes “a transient woman” that keeps coming back into the his life and then disappearing, the tropical character is shrewdly portrayed through the metaphor of a bird - a trickster figure that can take off in an instant.

A sultry, slow-burn track, the song aligns with the powerhouse, storytelling-esque approaches undertaken by the likes of Rival Sons, The Heavy Eyes and The Stone Foxes. Embellished with a solo outro from guitarist Tvrdy, the song is a very appetizing spoonful of the band’s blues-rock tinted sound.
