Walls of sound: Strange Flavours release “Gaze”
Their heaviest track to date, the Australian quartet are keen to explore darker territories.
Strongly influenced by late 90s and early 2000s alternative rock acts, Strange Flavours are carving their own identity in the genre’s modern scene. Gigging around top Sydney venues such as the Oxford Art Factory, the Crowbar, and the Factory Theatre, the band are leisurely becoming acclaimed for delivering exciting live performances.
A robust combination of distorted riffs and arena-ready vocals, “Gaze” marks a milestone for the band’s musicianship, which has developed through relentlessly pursuing this heavier sound for quite some time. The new single also marks a push in momentum for the five-piece, who have been admittedly “quiet” since the release of 2020 EP, “Swept Away”.
Ready to climb to new heights, “Gaze” is somewhat of a small “welcome back” for Strange Flavours. Speaking about the track, lead singer and songwriter Matt explained:
"I wrote the main chorus riff years before and never made it into anything. Over lockdown, I had some time to reflect on a previous relationship where the other person had a level of narcissism that they believed put them at a level above even "the Gods". We basically stitched together some ideas we had from other tracks and formed this one, and lyrics just came naturally, which was unusual for me".
Nodding to top American alternative and pop-punk groups such as Rise Against, Pennywise and Jimmy Eat World, “Gaze” radiates a nostalgic “glory-days” feel that has found its time to mature.
