Suggestions from Reddit: 5 Rock and Blues acts you need to hear

I asked a Reddit sub-group to suggest great rock and blues acts to get into.

Here are my top 5 choices:

If you’re a fan of Greta Van Fleet, these guys are for you, no question. A hard rock Canadian duo formed by vocalist and drummer Cody Bowles and guitarist, bassist and keyboardist Kevin Comeau, the two members have an immense amount of talent between them. Like Josh Kiszka of Greta Van Fleet, Bowles has an incredible range and an ethereal vocal tone that just soars. Also the drummer, he gives Kiszka a run for his money in the multi-tasking department.

Paired with the talent of fellow member Comeau, Crown Lands achieve an intense, rich rock ‘n’ roll sound akin to Rush and Led Zeppelin.

Comprised of Michael Rafalowich, Adam Kriney and Morgan McDaniel, Brooklyn based trio Golden Grass are a self-dubbed, “proud throwback to the 70s heyday of heavy, trippy hard rock”.

Popular on the east coast of the USA, the band are said to bring together headbangers and hippies through their psychedelic infused, classic rock style sound. Influenced by The James Gang, The Allman Brothers, The Move, The Pretty Things and The Action, listeners will also hear characteristics of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Iron Maiden seep into their sound.

Pumping their veins with the lates and the greats, Golden Grass will transport you right back to the golden ages of rock and roll.

A story-teller, a sonic visionary and and experience-builder, Mortimer Nyx is something of an enigma. Blending blues, folk, rock and electronic textures, she effortlessly transitions from dreamy to dark soundscapes.

Finding little about the artist from coverage or social media online, the singer and producer is almost as mysterious as her music. About their 2023 album, their Spotify bio stated: “[Death of a cowboy] offers a profoundly tantalizing and intoxicating cinegasm for the ears. With a smooth, devilishly cool rock soundscape, and vocals deliciously dripping with attitude, the album navigates the story of our anti-hero, his lovers and his fellow desperados…”

Establishing themselves as the UK’s top south-eastern rockers, Bristol based Sons of Liberty are an outfit of experienced, well-travelled musicians drawn together by their love of the USA’s southern music scene.

Nodding to the finesse of AC/DC, Airbourne and Motley Crue, the band are nothing short of a deadly rock ‘n’ roll blend.

If I was to describe 77 in two words, it would be “AC/DC re-born”. Formed in Barcelona in 2006, the band were initially and unsurprisingly, a tribute act specifically dedicated to the longevity of AC/DC’s 1977 album, “Let There Be Rock”.

A true celebration of rock ‘n’ roll, the Catalonian band are the perfect contemporary name to transition to if you have listened to AC/DC’s entire discography from inside out.
