Act of the week: Alffa
Alffa are a two-piece hard rock band from Llanrug, Wales.
Formed by Dion Wyn Jones and Sion Eifion Land, Alffa create music that bites. Their 2019 debut album, “Freedom from the Poisonous Shadows” is one of my all-time favourite releases, and is comprised of both English and Welsh tracks. First hearing the track “Gwenwyn” whilst digging for acts with a heavier sound on Spotify, hearing the band’s use of their mother tongue combined with such a robust, blues-influenced sound, was like gold dust.
Inspired by the likes of The Black Keys, The White Stripes, The Arcs, Black Pistol Fire, Jimi Hendrix, Tymbal, and Jack White, I find the band particularly akin to fellow hard-rock duo, Royal Blood. Think gritty riffs, a very prominent drum presence and a distinct vocal character.
As a hard rock and blues fan above all else, Alffa were the exciting, contemporary rock act I was looking for. Recently releasing first single of the year, “Unkind Mind”, I think we’re gearing up to a defining sophomore album in the near future.
Alffa are featured on our “Hard Rock” and “Wales” playlists. Stream below!
