Act of the week: Pandas

Pandas are an exciting indie-rock fourpiece from Glasgow.

Combing intimate songwriting with an infectious indie-rock sound, Pandas are a band for your highs and your lows. Supporting fellow UK indie acts such as Shambolics , Pleasure Heads and Rats in 2021, the band have been nothing short of a joyful addition to the country’s booming scene.

In 2022, the band released debut EP, “Panadamonium”, to critical acclaim. Personally more of a hard rock and blues fan, there is something irresistible about the indie-rock style that Panda’s create, which is why they have been crowned this week’s Act of the Week.

Unsure of where exactly I came across the Scottish quartet, I do remember covering the band’s single, “Debbie” for ICK. Magazine back in 2021. Since this release, the band have grown a wonderful community of fans and boast thousands of streams on their Spotify. To pinpoint what I like about the band; I enjoy a combination of a distinct voice, feelgood riffs, tongue-in-cheek songwriting and a bottom-heavy drum and bass presence. Though Panda’s are not a “heavy” band, their basslines shine through in their songs, giving their sound much more warmth and groove than most indie acts. Have a listen to their criminally underrated track, “Hot Rod” and tell me you wouldn’t enjoy the song half as much without the bass.

If you’d like a taste of the band’s playful live dynamic, check out their Crowded Flat live session performance.

This year, the band also released a killer cover of Scissor Sisters track, “Filthy/Gorgeous”.
