Smokey grunge rock: Ash Red release new single "Control"
Blending atmospheric post-punk with emotionally charged performances and introspective songwriting, Ash Red aim to capture the hearts of listeners who appreciate the depth and artistry of alternative music.
Exploring the intricacies of human emotions and relationships, “Control” reflects on the gradual realisation of a once-close connection becoming distant, touching on themes of losing control and the sense of hopelessness that can arise from such situations.
Comprised of Arthur Murray, Tadhg O'Keeffe and Isaac Walsh, the trio are heavily influenced by The Cure, Joy Division, and Gang of Four, whose darker tones and artistic approaches have left a lasting impression on the band’s evolving sound. Paying homage to their niches but eager to offer a contemporary perspective into post-punk and grunge structures, Ash Red shrewdly navigate how they can develop from the sound of the greats that came before.
A little less dark than previous releases, “Control” is a marker of the band’s development into warmer grunge soundscapes. Using overlapping, psychedelic tones to create quite the textured earful, the single presents a euphoric quality that we have not heard from the band to this level.
There is a strong domestic atmosphere to this single - a poignant sense of home that is somewhat hard to swallow, but perfectly aligns with the band’s desire to fathom how humans deal with emotion (of which Irish people aren’t quite the best at). Better at thinking than speaking, the Cork trio have captured the Irish-ness within acquiescence, stubbornness and poor communication, which unite to become the catalyst for distance and ruin.
