Mother Mersy can “See right through ya”
Spreading the gospel of rock ‘n’ roll since 2015, Swedish rockers mother mersy are finding the sweet spot of where old meets new.
Shifting between dirty, up-tempo rock and melancholic, psychedelic ballads, the band are proud to show-off their soulful and unapologetic style - “The way we think rock ‘n’ roll should sound in 2023”.
Influenced by David Bowie, Joni Mitchell, Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin the four-piece also dip into the dark personal portraits of the novels of Stephen King, and the lighter, arguably more unpredictable, “powerfully uncompromising participants of RuPaul’s Drag Race”.
Releasing debut album, “From Above” last year, the LP is a wonderful introduction to a band who never hesitate to approach the “ugly and raw”. They explain:
"This is a powerful first album, which we have been working on for almost three years. There is a lot of pain and emotion in this material, so it feels so damn liberating and good to be able to show We are incredibly proud of ourselves, that we have fought on even though it has been difficult several times and an upcoming "divorce" has been in the air”
Sporting a larger-than-life attitude, the band credit producer Gustav Brunn (Danko Jones, Mando Diao, Viagra Boys, Timbuktu & Damn!) as a key strength of their unit. Capturing their inimitable live show energy in the legendary Tambourine studios and Yellow Studios, the album superbly expresses the band’s untamed character. Lead track, “See Right Through Ya” is the approximate half-point mark of the LP:
“The song is about us hungry souls, who invest and give everything to be able to live off what we are passionate about. It's a fight song for everyone who dares to dream, everyone who dares to be their full, beautiful and authentic self. This despite the fact that from an early age we are told to join the ranks, not be too visible or take up too much space. The song goes out to everyone who dares to fight for their dreams, but also to those who might take advantage of these people. Ultimately, we see through their agenda.”
A slick and sophisticated blues-driven track, the minimalistic structures paired with memorable dots of melody, warmly align the band with the likes of Rival Sons, Goodbye June, The Temperance Movement and Dirty Honey. And if you’re a fan of any of those acts, then you’re in for an absolute treat.
