Ethereal folk duo The Awning release new single, “Empty Plateau”

The second single from the emerging two-piece, the release comes in preparation for their upcoming performance at Ireland Music Week

Comprised of multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters Darragh Purcell and Evan Flaherty, “Empty Plateau” follows on from the humble success of debut single “July”, which introduced their unique blend of lush production, traditional elements and otherworldly harmonies to the Irish music industry.

Rreminiscent of the likes of Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes, the duo had an impressive 2023, performing at high-profile events such as Whelan's Ones to Watch, Indiependence Festival Cork, and Masters of Tradition in Bantry, where they appeared alongside long-time influence Sam Amidon.

About new single "Empty Plateau", the band explain:

"Empty Plateau" is a poignant exploration of the deep complexities within a fractured family relationship. The song captures the yearning for a connection that was never fully realized, weighed down by trust issues and painful betrayals. It conveys the heartbreak of witnessing a loved one's self-destructive behavior and the relentless cycle of hope and despair that follows, leaving a lasting impact on those who care the most."

Joining the likes of Amble, Kingfishr, Ye Vagabonds and The New Leaves in the modern Irish folk revival, The Awning are a wonderful duo to have emerged this year. This single features a stunning balance between strings and vocals, with every single element having a story to tell. There’s an extreme sense of poignancy but calmness to this track - a sense of yearning that seeps its way into Irish folk more often than not. This duo, only at their second single, prove their capabilities of making difficult themes, painful memories and wistful stories sound beautiful to the ear. Attendees of Ireland Music Week have a very special showcase in store.
