ANOMALyS release self-titled debut EP

An exciting new band from Belfast, ANOMALyS’ sonic territory spans far and wide.

A five-track collection covering everything from “sun-drenched jangle pop” to “chest thumping blues rock”, ANONMALyS are our favourite new wildcards on the scene. A positively exhausting exploration of ideas, “ANONMALyS” is at its core, centered around the duo of Stephen Moreland on vocals, guitars and keyboards and Louis Orr on guitar. Later joined by Padraig Manning on bass and Luka Maxwell on drums, the beefier line-up led to the band winning the prestigious Clash of the New Breeds competition and feeling ready to begin their EP.

Choosing to record the drum tracks in Belfast based studio Earth Music, a DIY approach to their sound came from further recordings taking place across late nights and early mornings in Stephen and Louis’ home space. Calling up long-time friend Reece McGuiness (Foreign Mornings) to mix and master, his sharpened ear combined with the band’s unique blended sound formed the best of both worlds for this incredibly versatile EP.

You’ll get every texture and stylistic flavour under the sun from ANONMALyS: Everything is framed with an indie/alt-rock character, yet their sound is made all the more unique with splashes of funk grooves, jazz charm, pop energy, electronic attitude and blues temperaments. For anyone who likes to analyze music, this EP is a true treat. ANONMALyS are brash, but vulnerable, defiant, yet composed and could probably write something to suit any brief you give them. This is what we like to see so early in a band’s career, and they are daring to expose this all in one go, but shrewd enough to understand exactly how to use their unpredictability to set them apart. Releasing so late in the year also sets them up for an eventful early 2024 - so we applaud ANONMALyS for perfectly executing their momentum. ANONMALyS know what they want, and how to wow, and the EP captures this in all its glory.

“It’s clear across the EP that ANOMALyS often feel at odds with the world around them, using the band as their filter to help process the inequities and atrocities they see around them, both emotionally and physically.

The band’s collaborative approach to their EP both in recording and mixing shows a reverence for the scene around them while ensuring that they’ve captured their unique sound and delivered with it clarity and vision. A debut that explores a wide sonic palette and isn’t afraid to branch out, melding genres and sounds to create something entirely their own”
