New Alt Rock: Alffa + Breathe Free

The Welsh rockers return with a face-melting single after a 5 year hiatus

Welsh hard rock duo Alffa

Hailing from the rural village of Llanrug in North Wales, Alffa are the dynamic duo of guitarist/vocalist Dion Wyn Jones and drummer Sion Eifion Land. No strangers to the Welsh music scene, their breakout came in 2018 with the single ‘Gwenwyn’ becoming the first Welsh-language song to surpass a million streams on Spotify. Taking it up a notch in 2019 with the release of their sensational debut album ‘Rhyddid O'r Cysgodion Gwenwynig’ (Freedom From The Poisonous Shadows), one of our favourite independent rock debut albums ever, the duo were potentially too hot to handle at the time, taking a few years break soon after the explosion of an LP that it was.  Now, the powerful two-piece are thankfully back and better than ever, gearing up for their sophomore album due to land this November.

Proving once again why they’re a force to be reckoned with, their new single is a “potent cocktail of punk-rock fury and hard-rock grit”, channelling the swagger of Queens of the Stone Age and the powerful dual musicianship of Royal Blood, all delivered with a fiery Welsh spirit and a more electronic-driven sound. But beneath the blistering surface lies a deeper message; ‘Breathe Free’ dives headfirst into the internal battle we all face, transforming raw emotion and intense melodies into a powerful anthem of self-acceptance and inner strength. The band explain:

“This song invites you on a journey of self-discovery, reminding us all that embracing and celebrating our true selves is the key to true freedom.…‘Breathe Free’ is not just a song for us, it's a call to break free from internal struggles and celebrate the power within.”

Off the back of their three latest single releases, Alffa’s eyes are now firmly set on the globalstage, aiming to break out of the Welsh language arena and into the international spotlight. Their upcoming album, which delves into the depths of depression, self-doubt, and the search for purpose, will ultimately explode with a message of resilience, and we can’t wait to hear it in full.

Joining forces with renowned producer Gethin Pearson, Alffa have been pushing their sound further, transforming their struggles into another triumphant chapter. This single is daring - a bit different from what you’ve heard before from the duo, particularly if you’re tuning back in right after their debut album, but Alffa are fighting fierce, exploring new sonic territories and doing what all great bands should do: Grow.

Our ears are positively perked for this second album, and we’re confident that the Welsh duo will deliver something even more powerful, dense and intricate than what came before.
