Cavan Alternative Duo Dirty Marmalade Release Debut Album, “Hills of Breifne”
Dirty Marmalade is the creative nexus formed by Lil’ Phynott & Mildly Fool!sh, who after a series of serendipitous occurrences found themselves with an opportunity to independently produce music that reflects their experiences in the deep, hilly landscape of Cavan.
Their debut album 'Hills of Breifne' tells the bizarre story of their origins in Cavan, a personal commentary on modern social dysfunction in rural Ireland. Busy writing and releasing tracks in their own inimitable style, they are an Irish act with a true original flair - their sound described as “simultaneously familiar and also like absolutely nothing else”.
Dirty Marmalade is a politely strange, eclectic blend of class that isn’t averse to a bit of scandal - “Their live show will leave you feeling like you’ve met a bunch of wholesome but slightly weird lads at a psychedelic house party, surrounded by endless hills, with several missed calls from your partner...”
Their debut album tells the bizarre story of how the strong friendship of Lil' Phynott and Mildly Fool!sh has kept them surviving and thriving amongst the community of outsiders in their homeland of Cavan. The songwriting covers themes of manipulation, substance abuse and narrow-minded attitudes of small town cliques, a personal commentary on modern social dysfunction in rural Ireland. These themes are illustrated not only by the lyrical content but also by the audio samples weaved throughout the album which were spontaneously captured by Dirty Marmalade in their day to day lives. These samples include: inscrutable drunken arguments, boasting boy racers, angry voice messages & various eccentric encounters. The imagery and colour scheme hits on the disconnect of the mainstream culture of rural Ireland and the outside culture of the artists living there. The band explain: "We stand for the creative weirdos struggling to find their place among mainstream society."
