Dublin Indie band The Wu Release New Single, “The Weight”

What is left for young people in Dublin? Is it ok to not want to emigrate? The Wu explore the questions, concerns and realities of being in your twenties in Ireland.

An alternative three piece band from Raheny, the band consists of childhood friends Daniel Brady (vocals, guitar), Ciaran White (bass guitar) and Daniel Kearns (drums, vocals), who blend 60s-90s influences with their own brand of modern Irish indie.

The premise of their new single is clear: Knowing how to come to terms with your place in the world while the people around you move forward (literally and figuratively), is no easy task. But it’s something the Dublin trio acknowledge with honesty in the new disco-pop fuelled single, that stylistically nods to the likes of Two Door Cinema Club and Half Alive.

I’m branding the single as “sad-snazzy” - it stares in the face of unhopeful realities, lost ambitions and unfavourable circumstances, but through a pair of glittery glasses that are trying their best to find positivity in an unpredictable scene. It’s a simple set up done well: A four-to-the-floor disco beat topped with an earworm unison melody by vocals and guitar, all underneath a humble, grounding bass.

Honest, bleak topics that are explored through sound in a spirited way is always a refreshing perspective, but The Wu have truly made their mark with this single. There’s a little something-something in this single that personally, puts it top of their discography so far. Production, vocals, musicality and ideas in full flow - The Wu have set themselves up for a momentous 2025.

Independent, indie excellence.
