Dublin prog-rock outfit Dexterity releases new single “Vessel”

The second single from the band, led by Sarah Dexter

Dublin, Ireland prog rock solo artist / frontwoman / band leader Sarah Dexter of Dexterity

Dexterity is an emerging alt/prog-rock group, merging inspirations from progressive metal with alternative. Emphasising how unconventional rhythms and song structure can appeal naturally to the listener, the band combine this idealogy with flowing melodies and grooves you can dance to, to carve quite the interesting mix.

The backline, provided by bassist Adrianna Matthews, drummer Alex Rose and guitarists Cian Somers and Nathan O'Maoilearca, ground the grooves to make complicated rhythmic ideas and challenging structures feel incredibly natural.

The “at times heavy, at times melodic”, but ever-engaging new song "Vessel”, is a dynamic prog-rock tune that takes listeners on a journey through sonic and emotional ups and downs. Reflective of the trans experience of frontwoman Sarah Dexter, the song contemplates not feeling right in your skin and wishing you had another vessel. “Vessel” speaks to Dexterity’s ability to craft songs that combine elements of prog & rock to create unpredictable and engaging music that pushes the boundaries of genre. Rhythmic breaks flow seamlessly into melodic passages before finally cascading to an anthemic, singalong finish. “Vessel” is inspired by the journey of finding comfort in your own skin. Sarah says,

“I always knew that I was different, but didn't quite know how. I don't think anyone would have guessed that I would end up trans, which shows how limitless our limited vessels are.”

The song examines the idea that our physical forms are restricting but hold an endless capacity for change. Our Vessels constrain us, but they also connect us and set us free. She adds:

“There can be constant turmoil for people who exist outside rigid gender / sexuality binaries. Transitioning in terms of name and hormones and label is a journey, and it all takes a while. But I knew presenting femme, as my true self, had to happen. I changed the Vessel and the Vessel changed me, and everything else followed in its own time.”
