Penny’s Band release new indie single “Green Eyes Red”
The Northern Irish indie-rockers return with their second single
Formed in 2023, the band officially lauched into the scene with debut single ‘That’s Not The Girl I Met' on the 28th of June. Their second single, “Green Eyes Red” settles the band into their indie-rock sound, which nods to The 1975, Inhaler, Two Door Cinema Club and The Academic.
At its core, the band explain that their new single is a heartbreak anthem, and one listeners can use to draw on their own past experiences of loss and confusion, offering catharsis. “Green Eyes Red” was born out of the emotional aftermath of a complicated relationship. The song is a reflection on the breakdown of a connection once full of potential, and the questions left unanswered in its wake. The verses recount the last positive memory with this person—an intimate coastal drive to Ballycastle—while the chorus returns to the present day, capturing the disillusionment as the relationship deteriorates. The key lyric, “I wouldn’t listen to the words she says, cus her green eyes are slowly turning red,” symbolizes the negative shift in the other person’s character, and by the final chorus, the central question becomes, “Where did the green eyes go? I wanna know.”
Though the melody and lyrics formed quite quickly, the structure, however, was a labor of love, evolving over time with input from the entire band and the creative guidance of producer Adam Booth, who added synths and programmed instruments in post-introduction, which cut through nicely on the track. The bridge leading into the final chorus was especially significant, as the band worked together to perfect the transition, and to build a seamless connection into the song’s climactic moment. The single’s structure was simply but effectively arranged: The soft-touched verses elevate the past into an idealised memory, while the more grounded choruses reveal the harshness of reality, before the bridge mirrors the emotional confusion of heartbreak.
The band are a fine result of blending deep thinkers with contemporary indie lovers, getting the best of both worlds but not falling to predictability. Another promising indie band emerging from Northern Ireland’s talented, humble scene.
