“Phantom Power” by Phantom Power: A contemporary ode to grunge’s golden days

Assembled by guitarist Gregg Dallesandro in 2010, the Californian band offer a modern edge to the genre in their title single.

Though incorporating elements of metal and blues rock into their dense, commanding sound, the LA rockers stay true to their grunge roots in their sophomore album’s lead track. Grounded by the bottom-heaviness of bassist Jed Hathaway (formerly of Downer) and drummer Felipe Restrepo (Fatso, Seis Paetones), the group’s treble side is completed with vocalist Scott Schaffer, who cuts through the darkness with anguish and passion.

From the “Phantom Power II” album which was produced by and engineered by Paul D’Amour (Tool, Feersum Ennjin), the single was recorded at Chris Thorn’s Fireside Sound studios. Dubbed an, “up-tempo riff rocker”, the track is bound with sustained guitar textures and thoughtful harmony work, aligning it neatly with the likes of Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots.

A brooding track tied together with its psychedelic-touched chorus lifts, the single is a mighty introduction to the 2018-released LP:
