“That’s Not The Girl I Met”- The Debut Single from Penny’s Band
The Belfast indie-rockers put their best foot forward, hoping to carve their own footprint in the northern Irish scene.
Formed in 2023 after Alex Talbot and Ewan McElhinney met at a charity fundraiser, the addition of bassist Xander deCock has since propelled the indie-rock newcomers forward, leading them to unveil debut single “That’s Not The Girl I Met” today.
Performing their first gig as a trio on the 29th of March in the Pavilion, Belfast, the band have a string of dates lined up off the back of this fine indie release, which was penned by lead guitarist Ewan McElhinney:
“I am so excited for the release of this tune, I wrote it two years ago and finally after so many music and personnel changes it's finally ready for peoples ears”
A “hauntingly honest and personal track about regret”, the introspective penmanship is juxtaposed with catchy riffs and a melody to get you moving, mixed into that dance-indie concoction we know and love. Lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Alex added:
“Singing this song has been an experience and a half because I connect with the lyrics in a totally different way than Ewan did when he wrote it. It's such a fun tune to play and listen to, and with summer coming up, we hope everyone can enjoy it musically while finding their own personal connection with the lyrics.”
Recorded back in the Spring with producer Aaron Milligan in his studio (which doubles as the practice space for local legends Brand New Friend), Milligan captures the band’s fresh spirit, which should perk the ears of fans of top indie and alt-pop acts Sam Fender, The Strokes, The 1975 and Inhaler. Releasing the song this month as a way to motivate them through exam season (though they admit no song is good enough to get you pumped for a test), the single’s youthful, nostalgic quality undeniably seeps through, expressing a longing for a fulfilling summer ahead. If indie-rock was a season, it would be summer, and Penny’s Band might just be the new life of the beach party.
