Irish Garage Rockers The Spudguns release second single, “The Bookies”

The Spudguns are a five-piece band hailing from the small towns and built-up areas in Ireland. They play for yourselves, for themselves, and for everybody else.

Working out of their studio “Big Beef Sound” in Arklow, Co. Wicklow, the band are continuously developing their DIY-style approach to recording, and are in the running to create quite a unique sound. Comprised of Thomas Wakely, Adam Burke, Kalebh Grocock and, brothers Eoin and Kealan Power, their music takes core inspiration from surf rock and garage rock, with subtle touches of psychedelia.

New single, “The Bookies” is their second release, recorded in house by Céin O’Dowd of Peer Pleasure, with mastering by Ivan Jackman of Hellfire Studios. The band’s rehearsal studio sits directly across from a bookies, which provides ample time for “people watching” inbetween rehearsal sessions. The single weaves between their core styles, but personally stands on more of a classic rock ‘n’ roll foundation compared to their debut. It is stylisically, more of a wildcard than debut single, “Dusty”, but the ecclectic mix of textures superbly reflects on the range of people and interactions the band would have spectated from their studio space. Pure interestingness.

The first couple of releases from a newly emerging band are truly some of the most exciting. Where will they go? Will they follow the path you think they will? At what point does “the” sound become “their” sound, or does it? It’s a beloved guessing game, and first (well, technically second) impressions tell me that The Spudguns - with their charming, rough-on-the-edges DIY approach and jumble of influences - have lots of ideas in the bank, and lots of energy in the tank. A guessing game will be part of the brand, and they’ll like it that way.

We eagarly await for what else is in store for 2025.
