Live Review - Mirrorglass perform 7 track original set at SingForMe Festival
Breathing new life into contemporary rock ‘n’ roll, Cavan’s Mirrorglass are paving the way for a new generation of Irish rock fans.
Formed in 2022, the young band are already turning heads across the country with their dynamic, classic-inspired sound. Recently playing at Leitrim’s Cornmill Theatre, the trio just played a slot at Cavan’s annual SingForMe festival, which was true Irish music history in the making.
Cavan has had quite the number of talented acts emerging over the last number of years (The Strypes, Áine Cahill, Priorland, KCD, Face of the Earth), and Mirrorglass are another addition to the county’s forever underrated but fruitful local scene.
Kicking off their set with soon-to-be-released debut single, “Hey, Honey!”, three things are rather immediately clear: Mirrorglass have good tones, great musicianship, and a glowing united sound. A strong, ear-catching introduction to their performance, vocalist/guitarist Joshua Bowles’ intricately placed, delightfully surprising soloing translates that we are in for a treat.
Succeeding track, “Let’s go to mine” perks the ear, and maintains interest: The band breathe a balance of rock ‘n’ roll with a touch of punk - like a glorious hybrid of ACDC and Greenday. Followed by “Scream” and “Waiting For A Saviour”, the latter showcases the band’s comfort in exploring rock with a touch of funk. Bassist Rowan Davis shines through with a crystal clear, slapped riff that powers through from start to finish.
By the halfway mark, the spotlight returns to Bowles, who showcases his character as a solo-force in a short but commanding, guitar-and-vocal interlude. The band come together for final tracks, “To The One Watching Over Me” and “Ghost Town”, where drummer Shane Galligan keeps the unit firmly grounded to the very end. A well-rounded, fully original set, Mirrorglass prove that in time, they will certainly grow to fill their shoes. Like a young Thin Lizzy, the Irish lads are poised and ready to give their all, and will no doubt be seasoned rockers by their late twenties.
